Tattoo Lining Techniques Video

Linework is the first skill you’ll learn as a new tattoo artist. If your lines are shaky, it will be very difficult to do good tattoos or get into a shop.

If your linework isn’t where you want it to be, the tattoo lining video tutorials below will show you how to:

  • Hold your tattoo machine
  • Stretch the skin
  • Choose the right settings for lining
  • Keep your hands steady while tattooing
  • Tattoo thick, bold lines

Video 1: Lining Basics and Beginner Mistakes to Avoid

In this video, our Lead Instructor, Nathan, explains the main mistakes new artists make that cause shaky lines. He’ll also go in depth about how to hold your tattoo machine so that your hands stay steady while you’re tattooing lines.

Video 2: Needle Depth, Hand Speed, and More

In Brandon’s lining tutorial, you’ll learn how to tell the difference between good and bad lines when you’re practicing on fake skins. You’ll also learn how to practice perfect needle depth, as well as how your hand speed and voltage affect one another.

Video 3: Next-Level Lining - Tattooing Thick Lines

Once you’re ready to move onto larger pieces, you’ll need to know how to tattoo thick, bold lines. In this video, we’ll explain how to change your machine’s angle for larger needle groupings, as well as which stroke, machine style, and voltage you need to make tattooing thick lines easier.

Great linework is only the first step on your journey to becoming a tattoo artist. Next, you need to learn how to shade, pack color, and create unique designs.

There’s a ton of information out there that promises to teach you to tattoo, but a lot of it is outdated or incorrect. This is why most tattoo artists trying to learn online pick up bad habits that can take years to unlearn.
